This will be a 9-week course in Blender, a free, professional-quality software suite which provides everything necessary to make animated movies, video games, special effects, and more. This class will be useful to people interested in 3D printing, digital art, 2D or 3D animation, digital prototyping, special effects/CGI, or generally learning new computer skills.

The course will cover Blender's user interface, 3D modelling, basic animation, materials and textures, and various useful kinds of output Blender can provide, with the heaviest focus on modelling. Depending on available time and participant interests, the class may also cover physics simulation, video editing, video stabilization, combining 3D models and real video, more advanced materials or animation, and Blender's internal video game engine.

Anything that doesn't fit anywhere else
Use this as a community whiteboard, however actual discussions should probably happen on the mailing list.

Funding
What are you folks thinking about for funding this and what type of funding are you open too? Membership fees, fund raisers, seeking out an investor, hacking the lottery? -- Deltaray 19:40, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

I would like to see this be user supported by membership dues, however I think we're open to about anything to help reduce costs for everyone. I have a spreadsheet () linked on the front page so that anyone can see what numbers we're looking at for the moment. Obviously variables like the final rent cost and other costs will vary the final amount, but with 10 members a rough shwag would be around $70 a month, 20 members and that can get down below $40 per member per month. Things like startup costs like rent-deposit I think we would look for donations (probably from ourselves). Also, and this should be discussed at some point, there could be some small fee-based services that could be offered like low-budget web hosting out of the space or other things that could help reduce costs. -- Dosman 21:20, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

A few other ideas for funding here and there are:
*Fixing things for people get them to donate or maybe just have a flat rate for the repair.
*Maybe a monthly/annual sale of things that have been created at the hackerspace
*Going to garage sales, finding cheap electronics things that can be resold or whatever. Like $1 items that could be fixed for cheap and sold for $20 or something.
*Buying IU Surplus stuff to resell (this can be dangerous though because we could wind up with lots of junk)
*Hold some interesting event in order to take donations.
There are lots of possibilities. -- Deltaray 17:15, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
Deltarayhttp://bloominglabs.org/index.php/OpendiscussionOpendiscussion2009-05-18T17:14:48Z
Deltaray:

I think building equipment like an AC (like this simple project), fridge, chairs and tables as you mentioned would be a great way to get people involved from the beginning and give them a sense of ownership in the whole thing. -- Deltaray 05:26, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Deltarayhttp://bloominglabs.org/index.php/User:DeltarayUser:Deltaray2009-05-14T19:40:58Z
Deltaray: New page: Deltaray is Mark Krenz

Prospective Locations for the Bloomington Hackerspace
So lets collect some locations that may meet our potential needs. If possible post a google-maps reference. Also we can post info on commercial real-estate agents.

Basic Requirements:
* Needs to be inside or close to Bloomington
** being close to a bus line is a big benefit. I won't say its a requirement, but it will definitely attract more students who don't have their own transportation.
* Cheap rent
* further items as discussed
*

Other things to consider about location:
* Probably want something industrial - lower rent and no noise restrictions
* At least basic parking accommodations, hopefully enough for at least 5-10 cars, more is better
* Garage entrance might be nice, but certainly not required (allows more ventilation, also car hacking)
* A restroom may not be mandatory but should be considered
* A place to put up Ham radio antennas and/or free-to-air dishes outdoors might be nice
* A fixer-upper might also be in order, up for discussion based on locations found
*

Important things to inspect when checking out locations
* verify the roof does not leak, look for freshly repaired ceilings/walls
* verify utilities available (power, water, trash, restroom a plus, net access)
* does it have 3-phase power available? Any other types of power? (2phase, current capacity)
* also apparently industrial power areas can have higher power rates, need to verify with agent or power company
* who are the neighbors? any problems with burglary or vandalism in the area?
* do they care if we install outdoor antennas or dishes?
*

Potential Locations
The order of the listing presently does not indicate order of preference.

* BHS Candidates on a shared Google map
* Fountain Square - Central, basement offices are cheap (like $200/month, includes utils), proximity to other things like Game Preserve, resturants. Smithville has talked about wiring the building with ethernet jacks before. Downtown may make it easier to get others involved.
