Having guests (non-members) in the space
Often new members ask if it is ok to have friends and family members in the space with them outside of our public meetings. This is totally ok, we encourage folks to show their friends and family around Bloominglabs. We just ask two things. First, they must sign a liability waiver . Second, your guests are your responsibility. If you are having kids in the space it's your responsibility to make sure they don't get hurt if they are in the workshop. If they make a mess or cause a problem (whether they are kids or adults) it is your responsibility to handle it. That's it!

Using the big tools
If you wish to use the larger tools like the laser cutter and the machine tools please see our Training category. We generally require training or we verify your experience before turning people loose on those. Otherwise please email the members list if you are unsure who to ask or where to get started.

Using the space itself
There are some things in the space which may not be immediately obvious how to use.

How to host a Bloominglabs workshop
Members: we would LOVE to see you run a workshop on a topic you feel confortable talking about (even if you are not a member). Simply contact us at a meeting or send us an email and we can discuss your idea (members should use the members mailing list, non-members can reach us at contact at bloominglabs dot org). Workshops can be members-only or open to the public. We will work with you to identify any tools or supplies you would require and address any safety concerns. Generally members help each other out during workshops so it's not you alone working with a class of 20 people. We try to avoid our normal meeting dates for workshops (currently Wednesday each week) as there simply is not enough space on those evenings.

RSVP management
We ask potential attendees to RSVP so we can get a idea of what attendance will be like, the address for this is rsvp at bloominglabs dot org. The person organizing a workshop can receive RSVP mail by subscribing to bloominglabs-rsvp at bloominglabs dot org once the workshop schedule has been posted (list access is restricted to members but anyone can post to the list). Once your workshop has concluded simply unsubscribe from the list.

We have a closed circuit TV network in our space. A group of us ran coax to 3 locations through the ceiling in our space. We have several video sources which can deliver video to the network and hope to support multiple methods of output. The most practical use is for workshops which over crowd our largest room (the workshop), a video feed can deliver the content to all the other rooms in the space. Also the system can be used to play music throughout the space, as well as watch movies and other fun things.
How to use the A/V rack
# Turn on the power strip in the bottom of the rack, it is dark grey and may be somewhat buried - the cord and strip are labled, the cord runs into the front of the rack.
# Select an A/V source from the 8 channel switcher (VGA from front room, MAME cabinet, DVD player, PCH/Pop Corn Hour, VCR, etc.)
# Power on the A/V source if required (DVD player, VCR, etc)
# Turn on the TV in the room you wish to view the A/V feed
# When you are the last person out of the space or done with the A/V rack please turn it off (along with any TV’s or projectors)

Video sources
* Pop Corn Hour network streaming device
* VGA to composite input (MAME cabinet)
* VGA to composite input from front room (laptop feed)
* 5-disk DVD changer
* VCR
* Composite feed from laser room (camcorder - view of laser cutter bed)
* Composite feed from front room (unconnected)

Additionally we can switch to our cable TV feed (which comes with our cable internet access).

Video switcher
Kramer VS-801N with 8 inputs to 1 output (2 parallel outputs), serially and manually controlled.

RF Modulator
We have a frequency agile RF modulator which can output channels 2-99, currently set for channel 6. We plan to add additional channels as more RF modulators are accumulated.

Splitter
A 4-way low-noise video splitter is being used to feed 3 TV's throughout the space and a monitor on top of the A/V rack.

Outputs
* All TV's on the coax network
* Projector in front room (2nd composite output of switcher to VGA converter in A/V rack)

Coming soon!
* RF Modulators waiting to be installed - ChannelPlus 5525 dual channel agile modulator, a Blonder Tongue agile modulator, and modulator factory set for channel 10.
* 16 input Bosch Video multiplexor - video only, can combine multiple video feeds into a single display (4x4, 8x8, etc)

Possible additions:
* Video to IP so members outside the space can see what is on the network

Here is how to use these things:

* Audio Network - How to jack into the speakers spread around the space
* CCTV Network - How to control the TV's spread around the space, connect to the projector in the front room, etc.

Thanks!

Establishing business entity
<strike>Bloominglabs LLC was established in July 2010 to operate the space.</strike>

Bloominglabs LLC operated from July 2010 until December 2012 when the LLC was closed down. Bloominglabs Incorporated (non-profit) was opened in December of 2012 and is how the space operates to the present day.

Sample declaration of how money is handled by the organization
It's probably a good idea to get an early jump on this and make things as transparent as possible before any money is formally collected in the name of the hackerspace. To foster discussion on policy formation I've started an outline, this is not meant to be carved in stone. I've started with some questions and then followed up with a rough policy that tries to address them. This could also become a part of our bylaws as we form them.

Money Questions:
* Q1) What happens if workshop fees overshoot membership dues? What happens to our business model if that becomes a significant amount of money?
* Q2) Will there be any reimbursement to members that host workshops, beyond materials costs paid out of pocket?
* Q3) What happens to any additional income collected beyond materials costs?
* Q4) If workshop fees become a large source of income, can we investigate lowering membership costs, or move to a yearly fee instead?

Goals:
* To acquire and maintain 3 months of rent+expenses for the space
* To support workshop supplies so members no longer have to fund this out of pocket
* To Support further workshops and expansion of activities

Sample Money Policy:
All membership dues and workshop fees shall go into a General Fund for the hackerspace. The General Fund has three primary purposes, in this order:
* 1) cover rent and monthly expenses for the space
* 2) repay material costs paid out of pocket by members for workshops
* 3) Acquire equipment and materials for use by members

Collections:
* Members pay monthly dues of $n
* Workshops with fees are paid to the general fund

Payouts:
* Money is paid out of the general fund for rent and utilities (gas, electric, internet)
* Money is paid out as reimbursement for materials paid for out-of-pocket for workshops
* Further payouts require board review based on a graduated scale of cost (under a certain amount only requires the Treasurer to agree, above requires membership vote or similar majority agreement)
So we really should have a formal business entity to fold all this under. This is a page to help us organize all this. This should all be done with the interest of minimizing time spent doing paperwork/business activities and maximizing our ability to get real stuff accomplished (which is the ultimate goal of this entire endeavor after-all).

Welcome
Welcome to Bloominglabs, Bloomington's Hackerspace. For members, this document is here to help you integrate into our group as easily as possible. For non-members, you can see if becoming a member is something you might be interested in.

Becoming a Member
We want to make sure you can get the most from your experience with Bloominglabs. If you are interested in becoming a member we ask that you attend 3 meetings or workshops and get to know everyone first. Let someone know of your intent to join and we'll mark you down. Once you've been to three public events we'll have you fill out a membership form and pay the first months dues. That's it! We always welcome new people and even if you don't wish to join you are welcome to hang out at the public meetings each week.

Your Role (as a Member)
Facility Operations
Hours of Operation
The Bloominglabs Space is accessible to members 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Wednesdays are our public meetings from 6:30pm until midnight and the space can get rather busy.

Liability Waiver
YOU NEED TO SIGN ONE BEFORE YOU ENTER THE SPACE! They are conveniently located in the hanging file next to the door to our room.

Safety Third
When filling out your membership application you will be required to fill out a liability waiver (if one is not already on file) as well as be shown the location of all building exits, fire extinguishers, and the first aid kit. It is your job to watch out for your own safety.

YOU NEED TO BE QUALIFIED BEFORE YOU CAN USE ANY POWERTOOLS! You must talk to the Bloominglabs safety zsar or a qualified qualifier and take a brief safety course before you are allowed to use any power tool. Usually this is a fast process that only takes a moment of your time, and you can be qualified on multiple tools in one sitting.

Workshops
Members get free access to public workshops and supplies. Don't see a workshop on the calendar that interests you? Ask around and see if anyone else shares your interests, you might be the last straw which makes a workshop happen.

Interested in Teaching?
# Read this page: Hosting workshops
# Pick a topic
# Guage interest from the membership
# Pick a date (non-meeting date)
# Talk to a Board member to get your event advertised and put on the calendar
# DO IT!
Pretty much whatever people want to work on or learn is fair game. We currently have an electronics and robotics focus but there's also interest in general science and astronomy as well. We have funded a laser cutter, which is now on-site!! What can people do with this you might ask?? It can cut light wood and acrylic for rapid prototyping. It can also etch wood, acrylic, and metal. Many objects from iphones to laptops can be directly engraved with a laser. == Who are we? ==
We are a bunch of people that want to do interesting things and explore the world and technology around us. Expression of this interest takes at least as many forms as we have members, and often employs an amalgam of found and newly-constructed hardware and/or open-source and self-authored software components, but may be as simple as screwing some pieces of wood together to make a useful tool we don't have yet.
What is a hacker space?
It's a physical location where people can share resources for their own creative pursuits. It's also a resource where people can come in off the street and advance their own knowledge. In urban locations it can often be hard to find places to weld/build/make noise and keep projects on-going without having to tear down and put-up your work each evening. With a hacker space people can work on their projects and not worry about annoying their neighbors or spouses. The social aspect is also an incredibly important component. Having people to bounce ideas off of and discuss your projects with when you get stuck is a great thing.
Reading Material
Here are some scans from books very much worth reading. First are three chapters from "Machining Fundamentals" on lathes and lathe operations. It's a highly illustrated book which shows many variations in lathes and how to use them.
* Machining_Fundamentals-Lathe-chapters_13+14+15.pdf.zip (139MB)

Next is a complete scan of the manual for this lathe. In addition to covering use of the lathe it also has a lot of info on machining in general too:
* AtlasLatheOperationManual.pdf.zip (254MB)

I also recommend reading chapter 2 on measuring tools from the Metal Working Handbook, as well as this chapter on turning from the same book:
* MetalWorkingHandbook-MeasuringTools-chapter2.pdf.zip
* MetalWorkingHandbook-Turning-chapter18.pdf.zip

For additional material on the subject of running and using a lathe use these links. The MIT guide is a single page with a good overview of lathe parts and operations. The WE Williams site contains complete PDF's of older books on using lathes. I have two expensive classroom books which cover lathe work which I will provide to Bloominglabs members in the near future.
* http://www.americanmachinetools.com/how_to_use_a_lathe.htm - A deeper read on lathes and how to use them
* http://www.wewilliams.net/SBLibrary.htm - Complete PDF's of older lathe manuals, all still relavent information.

Video Tutorials
These are free MIT videos which are a reasonable introduction to using a lathe. They are part of a 10 video series on machine tools, these are the lathe videos from this series. They are about 45 minutes in length each.

* - MIT video 3 for the lathe

More videos on running a lathe:
* - Youtube search for "Tubalcain" machining videos, many different videos on different aspects of using a lathe.

Tool Grinding
Tool grinding is just as important as knowing how to use the lathe. You grind a small bar of high quality tool steel down to the correct shape you need for the cuts you need to make. Each of the book downloads in the "Reading Material" section contain good info on tool grinding. However here is some more info on the subject.

Diagram
Video sources
* Pop Corn Hour network streaming device
* VGA to composite input (MAME cabinet)
* VGA to composite input from front room
* 5-disk DVD changer
* VCR
* Composite feed from front room (camcorder)

Additionally we can switch to our cable TV feed (which comes with our cable internet access).

Video switcher
Kramer VS-801N with 8 inputs to 1 output (2 parallel outputs), serially and manually controlled.

RF Modulator
We have a frequency agile RF modulator which can output channels 2-99, currently set for channel 6. We plan to add additional channels as more RF modulators are accumulated.

Coming soon!
A ChannelPlus 5525 dual channel modulator was recently acquired. Soon our network can expand to 3 simultaneous channels.

Splitter
A 4-way low-noise video splitter is being used to feed 3 TV's throughout the space and a monitor on top of the A/V rack.

Outputs
* All TV's on the coax network
* Projector in front room (2nd composite output of switcher to VGA converter in A/V rack)

Possible additions:
* Video to IP so members outside the space can see what is on the network
Reading Material
This is a scan of two chapters from the book Machining Fundamentals on mills. This is a highly illustrated book with lots of different mill configurations and ways of using a mill.

Here are some scans from an older book called the "Metal Working Handbook". I recommend reading the chapter on Measuring Tools at least:
This site has some more reading material on using mills:
* http://jjjtrain.com/vms/library.html

Videos
These MIT training videos are a reasonable introduction to the mill. They are part of a 10 video series on machine tools, these are the lathe videos from this series. They each are about 45 minutes in length.

July 2010
Bloominglabs is official!
Moved out of Jenett's basement and into our room at The Collaboration Room. Picked a name for our space. Formed Bloominglabs LLC and signed our lease for the room.

Held these workshops which where open to the public
* Soldering
* AVR programming I
* AVR programming II
* Arduino + RF/wireless

The Soldering workshop was our first and had 17 attendees (out of 6 RSVP's). The AVR workshops had 11 and 6 attendees respectively, and the Arduino RF workshop had 6 attendees. All went over extremely well and had very good feedback.

External Publicity
Local writer Kevin Makice wrote about The Collaboration Room and the Bloomington Hackerspace Initiative in his Wired blog Geek Dad. Member Joe Stone was at the Detroit Maker Faire the weekend of July 31st and sat on a panel about hackerspaces along with Mitch Altman.

August 2010
After the whirlwind that was July we relaxed and only held one workshop. Mitch Altman and Jimmy Rogers stopped by on August 19th to host a soldering workshop, it was another great success.
Bloominglabs is official!
Moved out of Jenett's basement and into our room at The Collaboration Room. Picked a name for our space. Formed Bloominglabs LLC and signed our lease for the room.
* AVR programming I
* AVR programming II
Laser Cutter
We have funded a laser cutter, and it is now on-site!! What can people do with this you might ask?? It can cut light wood and acrylic for rapid prototyping. It can also etch wood, acrylic, and metal. Many objects from iphones to laptops can be directly engraved with a laser. == What is a hacker space? ==

Membership
We are accepting memberships! Please see the Membership Manual for details.

Meetings
Currently we meet every Wednesday at 7:00pm at 3927 W. Roll Avenue, Bloomington, Indiana. These meetings are open to the public; anyone is welcome to attend. We usually meet for 2-3 hours and have a lot of fun. Having access to tools is only part of the equation, socializing with people and learning from each other is another large benefit from our group. Pretty much whatever people want to work on or learn is fair game. We currently have an electronics and robotics focus but there's also interest in general science and astronomy as well. If it's cool and interesting then we are all interested.

This is a listing of manuals and other information needed to keep our machine tools in good operation. This is not meant to be used to track assets or list out all of our tools, we have the asset tracking system for that purpose. This page is here to list manuals for tools and store information on consumables such as bandsaw blades.

JET Horizontal (metal cutting) Bandsaw
Model HVBS-56M

The blade is 64 1/2" long and 1/2" wide, thickness of .025". Needs to be a small toothed blade. How small should the teeth be? A minimum of 2-3 teeth should be in contact with the material you are cutting. Unless you are cutting thin-walled tubing this shouldn't be a huge concern, a regular metal cutting blade will be fine.
Delta vertical bandsaw
Model BS100

The blade is 59 1/2" long, it will accept narrow blades as well blades up to ?? wide.

* Manual (note: the manual is for a Black & Decker, however our Delta is EXACTLY the same machine)

Craftsman Bench Sander
Model 137.215360

Sanding belts should be size 4"x36", sanding disks should be 6".

Sears Bench Grinders
Model 319.190400
Model 397.19460

We have two bench grinders, both from sears. They will take a 6" grinding wheel. With some work buffing wheels can also be used.
Please add more materials!
A lot of laser projects require screws to hold the project together (project cases, mechanical devices, etc). This is one of many sites that has socket head cap screws which look sexy and work well:
WARNING: Because many plastics are dangerous to cut, it is important to know what kind you are planning to use. Make has a How-To for identifying unknown plastics with a simple process.
|-
! Material
! DANGER!
! Cause/Consequence
|-
| PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride)/vinyl/pleather/artificial leather/Moleskine notebooks
| Emits pure chlorine gas when cut!
| Don't ever cut this material as it will ruin the optics, cause the metal of the machine to corrode, and ruin the motion control system.
|-
| Thick ( >1mm ) Polycarbonate/Lexan
| Cut very poorly, discolor, catch fire
| Polycarbonate is often found as flat, sheet material. The window of the laser cutter is made of Polycarbonate because polycarbonate strongly absorbs infrared radiation! This is the frequency of light the laser cutter uses to cut materials, so it is very ineffective at cutting polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is a poor choice for laser cutting.
|-
| ABS
| Emits cyanide gas and tends to melt
| ABS does not cut well in a laser cutter. It tends to melt rather than vaporize, and has a higher chance of catching on fire and leaving behind melted gooey deposits on the vector cutting grid. It also does not engrave well (again, tends to melt).
|-
| HDPE/milk bottle plastic
| Catches fire and melts
| It melts. It gets gooey. Don't use it.
|-
| PolyStyrene Foam
| Catches fire
| It catches fire, it melts, and only thin pieces cut. This is the #1 material that causes laser fires!!!
|-
| PolyPropylene Foam
| Catches fire
| Like PolyStyrene, it melts, catches fire, and the melted drops continue to burn and turn into rock-hard drips and pebbles.
|-
| Fiberglass
| Emits fumes
| It's a mix of two materials that cant' be cut. Glass (etch, no cut) and epoxy resin (fumes)
|-
| Coated Carbon Fiber
| Emits noxious fumes
| A mix of two materials. Thin carbon fiber mat can be cut, with some fraying - but not when coated.
|-
| Any powder
|
| the compressed air will blow it away
|-
| Bare metal
|
|
|-
| Animals
|
|
|-
| People
|
|
|-
| Butane lighters
|
|
|-
| Gasoline or other liquids
|

Safety
Don't cut anything particularly flammable or noxious. Check the Laser Infobase page for this list

Fire
When using the laser, whether for engraving or cutting, stay and watch your job.

Know where the fire extinguisher is and be ready to use it.

If your job catches on fire:
*You are more important than the laser--do not put yourself in unnecessary danger to save the laser. (Cf. Bloominglabs rules)
*Use your judgment--flare-ups will happen, and most go out quickly (a second or so) on their own.
*Any flame lasting longer than a second or two is a fire--put it out.

Eye safety
Do not look directly into either the cutting laser or even the visible targeting laser.

Make sure the lid is down before you even try starting your job. There is an integrated safety lock-out, but don't rely on this.

The lid should absorb most laser radiation, but if you're cutting reflective material, it wouldn't hurt to use the tinted safety glasses (should be located near the laser).

Operation
Always make sure the water pump is working and that there's plenty of water in the reservoir (blue bucket below the blower and compressor). Operating the laser without the cooling system running will damage it.

Quick Start
* Turn on main power strip
* Verify water pump and ventilation fan are running
* Make sure print area is clear and clean
* Start/attach dedicated computer and start up RetinaEngrave
* Place material to be cut/etched on honeycomb
* Close lid, holding it at the middle so it doesn't catch in the back
* Move lens head to top left of desired print area using either onboard or RetinaEngrave controls
* Adjust speed and power to appropriate levels for material and job
* Run raster portion before vector
* Watch your job like a hawk
* Allow the blower to clear any remaining smoke before opening the lid
* Remove your engraved/cut object!

Additional Tips
* For higher precision placement of the lens (say, for engraving on small objects) hit the padlock button on the control panel until it says "Unlocked", then use your hands to carefully move the lens to the correct starting location. There's no need to relock the lens position when you are done, just start the operation.

We have funded a laser cutter, it should be on-site within the next 3 weeks!! What can people do with this you might ask?? It can cut light wood and acrylic for rapid prototyping. == What is a hacker space? ==
