Welcome to Bloominglabs, Bloomington's very own hackerspace!

A space for sharing tools and knowledge to make stuff

Bloominglabs is Indiana's first hackerspace (also known as a makerspace). We are a group of group of people who rent a shared workshop where we can build projects both collectively and individually. Our space is located at 1840 S. Walnut Street.

We are open to the public Wednesday evenings from 7pm until 10pm. Our open hours are family friendly.

Who are we?
We are a bunch of people that want to do interesting things and explore the world and technology around us. Expression of this interest takes at least as many forms as we have members, and often employs an amalgam of found and newly-constructed hardware and/or open-source and self-authored software components, but may be as simple as screwing some pieces of wood together to make a useful tool we don't have yet.

Bloominglabs was forged from the Bloomington Hackerspace Initiative and the former IU Robotics Club.

* Read our Bylaws for a more formalized overview

What is a hackerspace?
A hackerspace is a physical location where people can share resources for their own creative pursuits. It's also a resource where people can come in off the street and advance their own knowledge. In urban locations it can often be hard to find places to weld/build/make noise and keep projects on-going without having to tear down and put-up your work each evening. With a hacker space people can work on their projects and not worry about annoying their neighbors or spouses. The social aspect is also an incredibly important component. Having people to bounce ideas off of and discuss your projects with when you get stuck is a great thing.
Please see the Membership Manual and New Members for more details.

During normal non-pandemic conditions we would meet every Wednesday from 7pm to 10pm and every Saturday from 1pm to 4pm at 1840 S. Walnut Street. These meetings were open to the public; anyone was welcome to attend. Having access to tools is only part of the equation. Socializing with people and learning from each other is another large benefit from our group. Pretty much whatever people want to work on or learn is fair game. If it's cool and interesting you'll find somebody who's interested.

These are things we are working on, or would like to see, to improve the space. If you are interested in any of these, feel free to work on it! If you are unsure where to start, please get in touch!

* improve the tool and workspace arrangement and cleanliness
* purge excess junk
* vend snacks and drinks (we used to do this at the previous space, but haven't since moving) Achieved!
* <strike>revive the asset management system</strike>, and add our new assets to it
* make Bloominglabs's web presence friendlier
** The page you get when people from the public go to bloominglabs.org has an overwhelming amount of information on it.
** The New Members page and the Membership Manual should be merged together.
** In general, it would be great to see more participation in the wiki, especially on the [Projects] page.
** It might be good to have a page that lists all members with their name, picture, username, email, interests, areas of the space they are familiar with, etc.
* make the 3D Printers more reliable, make the 3D printing process easier, and spread the knowledge
* <strike>wire the CCTV system</strike>
* wire speakers in the lounge (and maybe in the classroom)

Current Initiatives
These are things we are working on, or would like to see, to improve the space. If you are interested in any of these, feel free to work on it! If you are unsure where to start, please get in touch!

* improve the tool and workspace arrangement and cleanliness
* purge excess junk
* <strike>wire the CCTV system</strike>
* wire speakers in the lounge (and maybe in the classroom)

Public meetings and Membership
Currently we open to members but are closed to the public until the pandemic situation improves.

Despite this we are still accepting new memberships! Since we are closed to the public for the time being please send mail to contact [at] bloominglabs dot org to arrange a tour and to learn more about our on-boarding process.

Plant Tower
Plant towers are made from 55 gallon plastic barrels. A finished barrel has around 50 pockets on the side and an open top for plants. There's also a tube in the center for compost. One plant barrel takes about 1.5 hours to make.
Tools needed are:
- jig saw
- corded / cordless drill with step drill bit
- propane torch
- sharpie

The cost for the workshop is $40 for members or $50 for non-members.
Heathhttp://bloominglabs.org/index.php/RainBarrelsRainBarrels2021-03-13T00:27:52Z
Heath: /* Rain barrel */

Meetings
Currently we meet every Wednesday at 7:00pm at 1840 S. Walnut Street, Bloomington, Indiana. These meetings are open to the public; anyone is welcome to attend. We usually meet for 2-3 hours and have a lot of fun. Having access to tools is only part of the equation, socializing with people and learning from each other is another large benefit from our group. Pretty much whatever people want to work on or learn is fair game. If it's cool and interesting then we are all interested.

I bought quite a few cabinets that were store returns. Quite a few had either came apart or needed some pieces replaced. Most of the repairs I did was replacing sides because the hinge screws blew out of the plywood or re-gluing the cabinet door.

Sides

Since the cabinets were white, I bought some white shelving from menards that were a little thicker. I then cut pieces to fit and re-attached the sides.

Front

Several of the front doors weren't glued very well and fell apart, so I made a holding jig that would allow me to clamp the sides together while the glue cured.
Two of these cabinets were deemed good enough to become the medicine cabinets in the master bath, which I will call a success.
Heathhttp://bloominglabs.org/index.php/HeathsProjectsHeathsProjects2016-02-27T05:06:19Z
Heath: /* Done-ish */

Background
Growing up, I learned to play cribbage on some cribbage boards that my grandfather made. It was common for him to make boards and give them as gifts. We still have a couple floating around. Sadly, he died when I was five, so I didn't get a chance to learn any wood working from him. Below are my own attempts at making cribbage boards / tables using some of the same tools with some modern technology to help me out.

Laura's cribbage board
Story

This cribbage board was a christmas gift for my wife, Laura, christmas 2011. It stayed in a partially completed state for over a year as I didn't have the tools required to finish it (also, general laziness). After joining Bloominglabs, I gained the tools and the set aside time to finish the project and make my wife very happy.

Materials

It is made of Brazilian cherry (jatoba) given to me from co-worker from the remains of a flooring project.
The gems are from michaels.
The pegs are from ebay.

Build

I made the layout in microsoft Word (forgive me, I didn't know better at the time) using punctuation bullets in a table layout. I printed the layout, taped it to the boards, and drilled the holes with an 1/8" brad point drill bit. I drilled and cut out the peg / card holes in two more pieces of jatoba and glued them to the bottom of the peg boards. The ends are held closed using magnets. I will probably properly glue them in someday. There is enough room inside for the pegs and a deck of cards.

Cherri cribbage board
Story

Laura requested that I make a cribbage table for her friend Augusta, who learned cribbage from us and loved it. Being that I was a member of Bloominglabs and had acquired a few more skills since the first board, I decided on a different build this time. I thought it would be easier if I just made it as one board with holes drilled in the side, like my grandpa made, but one thing always bothered me about that style: you had to rely on friction to hold the cards in. My solution was to build in a slot that would hold the pegs and cards in place while stored.

Materials

Wood: from my wood burning stock. I picked up the piece and thought "I can get a cribbage board out of that".
pegs: ebay (same vendor as Laura's board).

Build

I took the huge chunk of wood and started cutting off pieces on the table saw at the space. A non-member that came to visit now and again offered for me to come out and use his wood working tools as they were better than what the space had and I gladly accepted. This allowed the board to be truly square and use a router to carve out the slot. For the holder, we got it close to the size of the slot and then I started slowly sanding it down till it fit perfectly. I also drilled a couple small holes in the board and the slot for magnets to hold the slot in place. For the holes, I used a 3/4" Forstner bit for clean sides and flat bottoms.
For the peg holes, I decided to use Bloominglabs newest toy, the laser cutter. I first tried to completely cut out the holes using the laser, but that just ended in fire in the test subject. My next idea was to use it to mark the holes and then drill them, which proved much better. Knowing what I know now, I could have done this portion much better and faster (vector cutting a small mark instead of rastering), but it still worked.

Laura's cribbage table
Story

The cribbage board is nice and all, but having a cribbage table is obviously a step up. Another bonus for Laura is she's able to keep track of her own score instead of me having to do both. My grandpa had made one that my mom still has, but there's no room to properly play on the board without getting in the way of the pegs. When this table came into my possession, I knew exactly what I would use it for. This was my wedding anniversary gift to Laura for 2015. We played over 250 games on it that year. One improvement I would make to the table is to add a small drawer on one side to hold the pegs and cards.

Materials

Table: as a payment from a friend I helped move. He didn't have the space for it.
Pegs: chrome rods from old printers

Build

From the table design, I knew that one side would be for the pegs and the other for playing cards. I measured the peg area and discovered that a 1/2" hole separation worked perfectly. I penciled in my marks and used the contraption shown below with varying success. Unfortunately, the drill press couldn't reach the middle holes, so I ended up drilling them by hand anyway.
To decide what size holes I needed, I looked through the chrome rods we had in the space. I found several 6mm rods, for which 15/64" drill bits work well. After cutting the pegs on the band saw, I put them in the lathe to clean and knurl the ends.

Story

Publicity Outlets
dosman gave me (Steve) a list of publicity outlets he’d compiled while hyping packetsniffers and FOOLS, so I ran with it and have been posting info about workshops and events on various sites and social media and TV and radio and so on. There’s no reason others can’t join in the fun, and in the interest of sharing the info, I created this document.

If you are running down the list to advertise something, weight the type of event you are submitting for the audience. The free forums and stuff is fine for smaller events. I'd use the radio spots and newpapers for workshops and fundraiser events too. However I wouldn't chase periodicals like Bloom Magazine for something like a workshop advertisement, but something larger like Makevention is fine. Just some food for thought for anyone other than sdc or dosman reading this page. Thanks!
Online Outlets
VisitBloomington Calendar

This one is pretty nice looking, good for posting links to Twitter and such.

http://www.visitbloomington.com/things-to-do/events/submit-event/

The Scene (ran by the herald times online) has free event posting

http://calendar.bloomingtonscene.com/

Bloomingtononline's calendar (seems to be used quite a bit)

http://www.bloomingtononline.net/calendar/

Bloomington Craigslist - The old standby

http://bloomington.craigslist.org/cal/

Eventful

This site is very nice looking. I’m not sure how much it is used

http://eventful.com/bloomington/events/

FYI, seems like other sites do pull events from Eventful automatically like this one.

BTown-Banter

http://viewpoints.iu.edu/btown-banter/

This is an IU affiliated blog. It covers tech events like TEDx etc. so may be good to reach out to as appropriate.

MobTalk

http://mobtalk.net

Monroe County centric message board. Not a calendar but might be worth posting some events here.

Make magazine - no longer does any advertising for hackerspaces :-(
<s>
http://makezine.com/cs/user/create/event </s> (link is now a forward to an old kickstarter)

http://blog.makezine.com/archive/category/events - this seems to be dead, no events are listed and it's unclear how to submit anything to them :-(

<s>There’s also Hackerspace Happenings on the Make site. As of this writing John Baichtal is the guy you need to email: nerdyjb@gmail.com</s>

Meetup.com

http://www.meetup.com/cities/us/in/bloomington/groups/

Costs $19 for 1 month in "organizer dues", we already have everything they try to provide for you (people who know where we are).

<s>Let’s go bloomington - Includes monthly printed calendar...get your stuff in early:

http://letsgo.terrorware.com/</s>

As of 4-2014 this calendar seems to be in a state of detrius, letsgobloomington.org expired and all contact email addresses went away with that. All events currently listed are recurring ones that go on forever. Might have some luck pinging them via facebook.

Radio and TV
WFIU event submission (web calendar with some/most events read on the air)

http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wfiu/events.eventsmain?action=submitEvent

This appears to be an especially good outlet as it’s been mentioned more than anything else on this list when we ask how people heard about us.

WFHB on-air event calendar

Available free to non-profits

Email calendar@wfhb.org with the event, approximately 1 week before the event, event is read on air the day it is to happen

CATS Community Calendar

Submissions may be made by any non-profit (rolls on channels 3, 12, and 14 when there's no programming):

http://catstv.net

Now submissions are by email to: commcal (at) mcpl.info

WRTV 6 (Indianapolis ABC affiliate)

http://events.theindychannel.com/

WCLS event submission

submissions made by non-profits will be put on air for free.

Must submit at least 2 weeks in advance

http://wclsfm.com/psa.htm

Magazines and Print
IDS events submissions

http://guides.idsnews.com/happenings/new

<s>(man that form is not friendly - if title > 30 characters, throws yr whole submission away.)</s>Seems they have fixed their form, works better now

Herald Times classifieds

Free submission of events to their online calendar (non-profits only). Otherwise it would be a paid classified add or other advertisement:

https://heraldtimesonline.com/htoclass/

The Ryder

editor (at) theryder.com

They accept paid advertisements, we used them for Makevention 2013. No one reported seeing the ad in the survey. Unsure if they do smaller free spots for smaller events.

H&L Magazine

jfinch (at) kiva.net

BLOOM Magazine

editor (at) magbloom.com

We had an article in there in 2011

Misc
<s>Bloomington Arts

I'd like to reach out to artists that use technology, I think if we talked to the people running this site they may be interested. Apparently arranging events to be posted on their calendar should be done by contactingmarc@artlives.org

Site throws an IIS error now, dead.

Intro to Machining
We are presenting a machine tool workshop focusing on manual mill and lathe work. The goal of this workshop is to get students able to safely and comfortably perform lathe and mill operations and be able to continue their learning by doing further projects after the workshop has concluded. Machine tool work requires a lot of knowledge including book learning along with practical experience. This workshop will get participants started with a basic understanding of lathe and mill operations and other related skills. We will start with safety, then cover proper operations of the mill and the lathe. Then we will cover indicating and measurments followed by the project. Additionally, any students who want to go on to learn CNC work will benefit by having concepts and knowledge of how to perform manual mill and lathe work.

* A maximum of 2 students will be allowed to take this workshop at the same time with students working together.

Pre-home work
The duration of this workshop is only 12 hours, in order to maximize the benefit each student should do the required pre-homework before attending the actual workshop. It's not required to fully understand all of this material, however you will be familar with terms and operations along with concepts beyond what we will be teaching. Additionally, we have much more training material beyond what is presented here so students are free to go beyond the prescribed homework. However at a minimum please try to get through the prescribed homework.
** Jay is willing to bring his photo booth (doesn't necessarily have to be in the Bloominglabs area)
* Laser booth
** Dan (a.k.a. Laserman)
* Vacuum forming machine
** Need a volunteer for this
** Need to work with the Soapy Soap people to mold soap from the molds we make at Makevention
** Need to have things to mold
** Do we need more plastic? (yes, I will order some after August 1st - Nathan)
* Sales/donation desk
** Need a volunteer for this
* DIY speakers desk
** Need a volunteer for this
** Rowan said that he can help out for a few hours here
* Twinkie launcher
** Need a volunteer for this
** Need to acquire twinkies
* Circuit bending booth
* Frankentstein stuffed animal booth
* Heath's booth
** Bicycle - currently being built.
*** Really want it on the bike trail for people to ride.
*** I'd be glad to switch out with people throughout the day.
** Rain barrels
*** If someone else wants to run the rain barrel booth that would be awesome-tastic.
*** Could have some barrels there that people could build them on site.
*** a sign up sheet for a Bloominglabs barrel class.
*** another sign up sheet for people to purchase rain barrels pre-made.
Heathhttp://bloominglabs.org/index.php/User:HeathUser:Heath2013-05-16T18:07:31Z
Heath: Created page with "Hello, my name is Heath and have been a member of Bloominglabs since April 2013. We have funded a laser cutter, and it is now on-site!! What can people do with this you might ask?? It can cut light wood and acrylic for rapid prototyping. It can also etch wood, acrylic, and metal. Many objects from iphones to laptops can be directly engraved with a laser. == What is a hacker space? ==
It's a physical location where people can share resources for their own creative pursuits.
Meetings
Currently we meet every Wednesday at 7:00pm at 3927 W. Roll Avenue, Bloomington, Indiana. We currently have an electronics and robotics focus but there's also interest in general science and astronomy as well. If it's cool and interesting then we are all interested.

I have a couple sources of cheap, one-use poly barrels. I will be making the following out the barrels:

Rain barrel
I'm using 55 gallon poly barrels to make the rain barrels. I'm following these instructions (link to come):

If a member wants to make it themselves, it would cost anywhere between $20 - $40, depending on the cost of the barrel and chosen materials. I will be selling them complete for $50 - $60, but will offer a member discount. Watch for the rain barrel workshops!

Compost barrel
A 55 gallon poly barrel is used to make the rolling compost barrel. More info to come.

Barrel planter
I will be using 30 gallon poly barrels to make the plant towers. I'm really excited to make these and hope they become a hit due to the amount of plants you can fit into a small space. More info to come.
Heathhttp://bloominglabs.org/index.php/MedicineCabinetsMedicineCabinets2013-05-16T17:45:36Z
Heath: Created page with "I bought quite a few cabinets that were returned to the store.
Story
The cribbage board was a christmas gift for my wife christmas 2011. It stayed in a partially completed state for over a year as I didn't have the tools required to finish it (also, general laziness). After joining Bloominglabs, I gained the tools and the set aside time to finish the project and make my wife very happy.

Build
It is made of Brazilian cherry (jatoba) that was a co-worker's left over flooring.
The gems are from michaels.
The pegs are from ebay.
